What is this question about
Interviewers are usually assessing whether your motivation is thoughtful, durable, and calibrated to the actual role rather than generic excitement. They want to hear that you understand what the job involves, that your reasons fit your level and strengths, and that you're making an intentional choice instead of chasing prestige, compensation, or escape from your current situation. A strong answer also hints at what kind of work environment helps you do your best work.
Key Insights
- You do not need a dramatic personal mission, but you do need a specific and credible fit. Show that you understand the role, the work, and why that combination is a good next step for you.
- The strongest answers connect three things: what the company needs, what you are good at, and what you want to grow into. If your answer only talks about what you want, it can sound self-centered; if it only flatters the company, it can sound rehearsed.
- Avoid answering this as a disguised 'why are you leaving your current job?' question. A little context is fine, but anchor on pull factors toward this role, not push factors away from your current one.
What interviewers probe atlevel
Top Priority
You do not need a long track record, but you should still connect your best experiences to what you hope to contribute.
Good examples
🟢In my internship I enjoyed taking a loosely defined task, asking clarifying questions, and turning it into something working, so I'm excited by a role where that kind of ownership matters.
🟢I've done my best work when I could collaborate closely, get feedback quickly, and improve each iteration, which is part of why this team setup appeals to me.
Bad examples
🔴I haven't done a role exactly like this yet, but I'm a fast learner so I'm sure I would figure it out.
🔴Most of my experience is from classes and projects, but I think I'd be able to help wherever needed.
Weak answers rely on generic potential, while strong answers draw a credible line from actual past behavior to likely future contribution.

Great answers
I'm interested in this role because it looks like a strong place to start my career in a way that's both hands-on and well supported. In my internship, I learned that I improve fastest when I can own a real piece of work, get feedback from experienced engineers, and then iterate on it. From what I've read and heard, this team seems to value that kind of learning-through-contribution rather than keeping junior engineers on the sidelines. I also like that the role is connected to user-facing product work, because seeing the impact of what I build is very motivating for me. So for me, it's a good match of environment, type of work, and the kind of engineer I want to become.
I want this role because it feels like a place where I can build solid habits while contributing to something real. I came into software from a coding bootcamp after working in customer support, so I care a lot about understanding users and making reliable, easy-to-use tools. This job appeals to me because it combines that customer mindset with the chance to work alongside experienced engineers who can help me grow in the right way. I’m also drawn to teams that communicate clearly and give direct feedback, since that’s where I’ve learned the fastest. At this stage, I’m looking for a role where I can keep learning, be dependable, and gradually take on more responsibility as I earn it.
Poor answers
I want this role because it seems like a great company and I think it would be a really strong place to begin my career. I'm honestly open to almost any kind of engineering work as long as I'm around smart people and can learn a lot. The brand and reputation definitely stood out to me too. I think once I'm here, I'll be able to contribute wherever the team needs help.
