I identified some key areas after my self-reflection of our session last night, and one important piece was not identifying the crux of the problem until very late, i.e. the scale of operation. Another piece that threw me off was the novelty of the problem and a mindset and framework I have been following that relies on reads and writes, and my unfamiliarity with the data flow problem domain where many of those constraints don't naturally apply. You were keen on letting me, the candidate, drive the discussion and watching closely with minimal hints for signals and started to share hints to first help me identify the crux of the problem. After a few attempts, we ran out of time but I appreciate the initial indication that you'd be starting a timer, reminding me the importance of time management during the discussion. After our interview, our discussion of how many subproblems exist within the problem was enlightening and underscored the necessity and importance of the requirements section to ask questions around guarantees that a system provides and its role in helping the candidate identify the core issues at the heart of the design problem they may have never seen the likes of before, driving down the ambiguity of the design problem to a set of conceptual problems in distributed systems theory. During our reflection discussion after the interview, we had some back and forth around design choices that should have happened as part of the interview but didn't but I appreciate you staying late to share your honest thoughts not just in terms of my performance but also your thoughts on the various design choices and their tradeoffs.
