Your Perfect Story About Conflict Resolution
In my previous role, I found myself at odds with my new manager over the future direction of our team. I had been with the company for a long time and had a deep understanding of the importance of our work on the integrity of FB and IG live. However, my manager, eager to impress leadership, wanted to pivot our focus to reels. Recognizing the potential long-term impact of this shift, I felt it was my responsibility as the team lead to voice my concerns. I approached my manager during our weekly meeting, armed with data and historical context to support my viewpoint. I presented the progress we had made on live, the projects in flight, and the potential impact of neglecting this area. I also highlighted the interest of the VP in our work, knowing this would resonate with my manager. Our discussion was a testament to the high trust relationship we had built. We listened to each other's perspectives, showed empathy, and found common ground. Together, we developed a comprehensive proposal for leadership, presenting a data-driven business case showing how both initiatives could drive significant impact - highlighting live's critical role in platform safety and reels' growth potential. The pitch resonated strongly with leadership, securing us additional headcount and resources. This led to our decision to expand our scope and split the team into two, allowing us to focus on both live and reels. The resolution not only benefited our careers but also boosted team morale as it catered to the diverse interests of our team members. Within six months, the live integrity team successfully launched three major safety features while maintaining our existing metrics, and the reels team developed a new classifier that reduced harmful content by 35%. This experience showed me that addressing conflicts directly, while remaining open to creative solutions, can lead to outcomes that exceed the original goals of both parties. Moreover, it demonstrated how turning an initial disagreement into a partnership can create opportunities for broader organizational impact.
